How to listen to your body

Most of us today spend most — if not all — of our time in our heads.
Thinking.
Analysing.
Interpreting.
Our minds are constantly trying to make sense of everything: situations, conversations, decisions, possibilities.
But somewhere along the way, many of us forgot something important.
Our bodies hold information too.
Your body is not just something that carries you through the day.
It is constantly sensing your environment, processing what is happening around you, and sending signals back to you.
These signals are subtle, but they are always there.
You’ve probably experienced them many times.
The sudden drop in your stomach when you hear unexpected news.
Goosebumps when something feels significant or slightly unsettling.
A tightness in your chest when a situation doesn’t feel right.
A sense of relief when you finally make a decision that feels aligned.
These are not random reactions.
They are ways your body communicates.
Your body is constantly interpreting what is happening around you and responding to it. Long before the mind fully understands a situation, the body has already started sensing it.
But because of the way many of us were taught to move through life, we often learn to ignore these signals.
Why Many of Us Stop Listening to Our Bodies
For many people, ignoring the body wasn’t a conscious decision.
It happened slowly.
Maybe you were taught to “push through” discomfort.
Maybe productivity mattered more than rest.
Maybe expressing emotions didn’t feel safe.
Maybe slowing down simply wasn’t an option.
Over time, the mind becomes the place we rely on for guidance.
The body becomes something we override.
We ignore the hunched shoulders that appear when work feels overwhelming.
We push past the heaviness in the chest when something doesn’t feel right.
We silence the fatigue because there are still things to get done.
Little by little, the signals get quieter.
Not because the body stops communicating — but because we stop listening.
And when signals are ignored repeatedly, they don’t disappear. They accumulate.
What was once a small sensation can slowly turn into emotional heaviness, recurring stress patterns, or physical discomfort.
Sometimes it shows up as trapped emotions that were never fully processed.
Sometimes it appears as tension that never seems to leave the body.
If you’re curious about how this happens, you can explore it further in my article on trapped emotions and how they affect you.
Over time, this disconnection can make it feel like the body is difficult to understand.
But the truth is, the body hasn’t changed.
The connection has simply been paused.
The Good News: Re-Connection Is Always Possible
Even after years of ignoring your body’s signals, reconnection is still possible.
The body is incredibly patient.
It continues communicating, even when we don’t respond.
It continues holding information, even when we overlook it.
Reconnection doesn’t require dramatic change.
It doesn’t require suddenly becoming deeply intuitive or perfectly aware.
It simply begins with listening again.
Just like any relationship that has been neglected, rebuilding trust with the body starts with small moments of attention.
Moments where you pause.
Moments where you notice.
Moments where you allow the body to speak without immediately trying to explain it.
How the Body Communicates
One of the reasons listening to the body can feel confusing is because the body does not communicate in words.
It communicates through sensations and subtle shifts.
You might notice:
• Tightness or openness in the chest
• A heaviness in the stomach
• Warmth or coolness in different areas of the body
• A feeling of expansion or contraction
• A sense of calm or unease
• Images or memories appearing unexpectedly
These signals are the body’s way of processing and responding to experiences.
When we begin paying attention to them, we start learning a language that was always there — we just hadn’t been taught how to interpret it.
And the more consistently we listen, the clearer this language becomes.
Some healing methods, such as Emotion Code and Body Code, work specifically with this body-based information to help identify and release emotional or energetic imbalances that the body may still be holding.
But even without any method, learning to notice these signals is the first step in rebuilding your relationship with your body.
A Gentle Way to Begin Listening to Your Body
Reconnecting with your body doesn’t require a complicated practice.
It can start with something very simple.
You don’t need a quiet retreat or long meditation sessions.
You don’t need to “do it perfectly.”
You just need to begin noticing.
A simple way to start is through a small four-step practice:
Observe without creating a story.
Notice what you feel in your body without immediately explaining it.
Sit with your presence.
Allow yourself a moment of stillness, even if it’s just for a few breaths.
Stay with the sensation.
Instead of trying to change it, simply allow it to exist.
Repeat.
That’s all.
At first, it may feel unfamiliar.
You might not notice much.
That’s okay.
Just like learning any language, understanding the body takes time.
But when practiced gently and consistently, something begins to shift.
You start recognizing signals earlier.
You notice when something feels aligned — and when it doesn’t.
You begin to understand your body’s responses without needing someone else to interpret them for you.
When the Body Starts Feeling Heard
When the body begins to feel heard, something interesting happens.
The signals become clearer.
You might start noticing when something drains your energy before it becomes overwhelming.
You might sense emotional reactions earlier, before they build into stress or frustration.
You may even find that certain decisions become easier because your body is offering guidance alongside your mind.
Listening to the body doesn’t replace thinking.
It complements it.
Your mind helps you understand the world.
Your body helps you feel your way through it.
And when both work together, decision-making, emotional processing, and healing can feel much more balanced.
